Discuss what happens if:

You miss a class…

Contact your tutor. If you let me know you’ll be away we can make time to catch up and I can send you any notes you miss. 3+ days requires a medical certificate.

You think you won’t be able to meet a deadline…

Contact your tutor. An extension may be appropriate if you have a genuine reason. Note: an extension will not be given if you have been lazy and just not done your work!

You DO miss a deadline…

Contact your tutor. Late submissions are accepted to a point any late submission will have a penalty applied to your grade. By submitting something, you may become eligible for a resubmit.

You receive a fail grade for your project…

Contact your tutor. You may be eligible for a resubmit.

You have a severe sickness or issue that means you cannot complete your project assessment…

Contact your tutor. You may be eligible for an aegrotat pass. This is very rare. Medical certificate or other evidence usually required.

I am sick on a class day…

Contact your tutor as soon as you can. You can phone the arts administrator, or email your tutor directly. If you are sick and miss course for 3 days consecutively you will need to provide a medical certificate from your doctor or the medical clinic on campus. It’s a good idea to get a medical certificate if you are away sick for quite a bit of class, as this will make things like extensions available to you.

I don’t think I can meet an assessment deadline…

You MUST talk with your tutor as soon as you think you are struggling with a project deadline. It is no good pretending the problem will go away. You tutor can help you plan your workload and advise you on how to access helpful services. If you have a genuine reason for being unable to meet the assessment deadline then you may be eligible for an extension; please consult with your tutor about this. An extension needs to be requested a minimum of 2 days prior to the deadline.

I miss an assessment deadline…

If you miss the deadline for you assessment you should still hand your work in, even if it is late. You may incur a penalty to your grade for it being late, or if you have a genuine reason your tutor may be able to cater to your needs. Do not make the mistake of thinking that just because the deadline has passed, that you have automatically failed the assessment. Always talk to your tutor about your options.

I have serious sickness or extenuating circumstances which prevent me from finishing my assessment work…

Depending on how much course work you have missed, you may be eligible for either an extension or an aegrotat. An extension must be requested at least 2 days prior to the assessment deadline. Talk to your tutor about this. An aegrotat is a form of pass-mark that is given in special circumstances to students who have already demonstrated an ability to pass the subject matter, but who are unable to complete the assessment due to extenuating circumstances. Talk to your tutor, your programme coordinator, and your head of department about this option. It is used rarely.

I run out of money for project materials or have no printing credit left…

If you run out of money and as a result you cannot complete your project due to lack of material, you will need to do two things: work out a way to complete your current assessment/s, and plan a way to prevent the same scenario happening again in the future. Talk to your tutor as soon as you realize you do not have enough money or printing credit to complete as assessment. You tutor can also direct you to student support services who have a free budget-advice service available. You can self-refer too.

I fail an assessment…

You may be eligible for a resubmit: this is where your tutor will advise you of what you need to do in your assessment to bring the work up to a pass mark. The maximum possible grade for a resubmit is C- (50%). Doing a resubmit does not guarantee that you will pass. You should request a resubmit from your tutor as soon as you receive your grades back after marking. Your tutor willcounsel you whether you need to do the resubmit or not, some students may find they already have enough credit from previous assessments to pass the paper without the additional resubmit.

I move house…

You must advise WITT of your new address. We send letters and grades out to the address you give us. If we have the wrong address, your transcript could be sent to the wrong location. Additional copies of transcripts will be sent at your cost. Advise the Arts Administrator of your new address. You can use the change of address form on this site.

I get a new email address…

Please advise both the Arts Administrator who will update WITT records and your tutors as soon as possible. Many tutors rely on having your accurate email address for class correspondence.

The printer isn’t working on the day of my assessment deadline…

On assessment day, your class is probably having critiques and you should be involved in the presentations too. You should talk to your tutor if it is ok to continue working on your project – they may ask you to wait until critiques are over. There are many printers on campus and you can try using a different one. If you have no luck on campus, you could look at getting your work printed at a print-shop in town. Relying on printing your final work on the last possible day is not best practice, and your tutor will advise you to print at least a couple of days prior to the deadline.

If I lose my files…

Lost files are generally not grounds for an extension, as you should have a backup. You should discuss what to do about your files with your tutor as soon as you learn you have lost your files. You will also need to be careful with file storage and backups in the future to prevent this situation from occurring again.
