Studios

WITT Art, Design and Media students have access to several different types of studio on campus:

Wet Studio

Located in F Block, this room has large sinks and is used for wet media such as paint and plaster work. If you are considering something “messy” then this is the place! Please clean up after yourself.

Theory Rooms

We have two rooms in F Block as well as three computer labs in B Block which get used as theory rooms and for lectures.

Computer Labs

The Art, Design and Media department has 4 computer labs; three of these use PCs (rooms B110, B202, and B203), and one located in F Block (F7) uses Macs. You are welcome to use these anytime campus is open, just please be polite and ask if you can enter if you see a class is running in one of them.

Photo/Video Studio

Located in F Block, you will need tutor permission, training and/or supervision to access this room. It is a bookable room so you can secure specific time just for your project. This room features a white cyc (infinity wall) and we ask that you remove your shoes when walking on the cyc to keep it spotlessly clean.

Other equipment in the photo studio includes: studio flash lights, video white lights, reflectors and diffusers, green/blue screens, as well as a Mac computer for tethered shooting and review of shots.

Darkroom

Also located in F Block the darkroom is for use only by students who have been trained and have permission from the photography tutor. It contains enlargers, water baths, and a film-loading room.

Fabrication Area

The fabrication area is located in F block and has benches for carving, sculpture, light carpentry work, and a spray booth for spray glue, spray paint or varnish. A selection of hand tools is available for students to use in this area. Please enquire with your tutor or the Arts Technician if you need help with the tools.

Workshop / Machine Shop

Our workshop located in F Block is for use under tutor/technician supervision only. It includes a welding bay, power tools, drill press, and lumber storage. You are required to follow all safety procedures and use all safety equipment when working in the machine shop.

Printmaking Rooms

Our printmaking facilities are located in F Block and include equipment for screenprinting, intaglio and letterpress prints among others. Some of the equipment and materials are hazardous so must be used only once you are trained by the printmaking tutor.

Open Spaces

Our students have access to two open spaces on campus. If you would like access to a computer you can use either our computer labs, or the open computing space on Level 1 of B Block.

Our F Block open space is used for a variety of purposes and if you require room to build a project ask your tutor if you can have space in the open area. Be mindful that towards the end of year this space becomes off limits for the exhibitions.

This area may also be used for class lessons as appropriate.

Students are generally not assigned their own personal studio space.

Library

The library provides resources and services for your learning needs. During opening hours you have access to books, journals and audio-visual material, orientations and information literacytraining. There are also computers, printing and photocopying facilities, together with dedicated areas for group work or quiet individual study. Access to the library catalogue, libraryand subject information, e-books and online databases is available 24/7 from the library website libraryhome.witt.ac.nz

Learning Support

The learning skills tutors teach a wide range of study skills on an individual, small group or class basis. The aim is to increase your chances of success in your chosen course of study. In particular, you may like to contact a learning skills tutor of you are a mature student returning to study; wish to improve your marks, or require catch-up skills.

Location: Learning Resource Centre, L Block. Phone 757 3100 ext 8838 or ext 8786

Email: learning.centre@witt.ac.nz

Referencing

In referring to other people’s writing (books, journals, etc.) in your work it is extremely important to acknowledge where the information came from.

Failure to acknowledge the source you have used is called plagiarism. At tertiary institutions this is considered to be a form of serious misconduct.

Normally whenever you are asked to write something (such as an essay) for an assessment you will be taught how to properly reference and quotes and citations you use. Ask you tutor for help if you are not sure about referencing. You can also get help on your referencing from the Learning Resource Centre.

Borrowing Equipment

The WITT Art, Design and Media department keeps a selection of gear available for students to borrow on short term loan.
A list of the currently available equipment can be viewed on the noticeboard outside the Art Tutor office in F block. Alternatively, you can ask your tutor if a specific piece of equipment is available.

To book an item, please come to the Art Tutor office and ask for the item you want. Your name will be recorded and you will be told how long you can loan the piece of equipment for.

It is expected that you return the item in full working order, and report any breakages immediately so we can get them repaired.

It the item you borrow needs batteries, then it is your responsibility to provide them.

Please delete images or format the media card for cameras before returning the item. Generally, tutors will format a camera’s card as soon as the camera is returned, so do not expect your files to survive long if you forget to download them!

After-hours Access

WITT Art, Design and Media students can apply for after-hours access to use the arts facilities on campus.

To apply, get a Key Fob Access form from your tutor, or download one from this site. You will need to have it signed by your tutor, programme coordinator or HoD. Take it to the Facilities department, ground floor of B block. You will be issued with a key fob which you can use as an electronic key to gain access to buildings after hours.

If you would like access to the photo studio, the Mac suite, or the printmaking area please consult with your tutor. These spaces have individual key-codes which you will need to type into a keypad by the door.

Note that all key fob accesses are logged, and WITT has a multitude of security cameras in operation.

Your safety is of the utmost importance, so we highly recommend you always have a buddy with you on campus. Keep your phone with you, and if you feel you are in danger call for help. We have security patrols on duty after hours and their number is located near stairwells and lift-shafts. Alternatively, phone the emergency services on 111 and ask for the police.

We ask that you report any suspicious activity to tutors, as well as reporting and damage to buildings or equipment so that we can get it repaired promptly.

Purchasing supplies

At the beginning of each course or paper, your tutor will advise you about any supplies or additional costs associated with your study.

You are expected to budget for your study costs accordingly. These may include:

- Printing costs

- Digital storage for files (pen drive, portable hard drive)

- Drawing materials (pens, pencils, specialist tools)

- Painting or sculpture materials

- A digital camera may be helpful

- Project materials (will vary from project to project)

- Other items as necessary

Some students may find these extra costs to be too expensive, and if you find yourself suffering financial hardship please consult with your tutor promptly. We have free budget advice on campus through the Student Support services located ground floor of B block.

Some supplies will be provided to the class by the tutor, while in other instances you will be expected to provide your own materials. Consult with your tutor about this.

Most printing is done through the swipe-card system, however some of our specialist printers in the Art, Design and Media department may be charged out separately to cover paper and ink.
Likewise, some of the specialist machinery or equipment in the Art, Design and Media department may have a part-charge associated with it. Please consult your tutor or the Arts Technician for advice on this.

- Warehouse Stationery

- Taranaki Stationery (in the Richmond Centre)

- Gordon Harris (Welington, Hamilton, Auckland, mail order or online)
